Funnel Cake

Whether enjoyed as a nostalgic treat at the fair or made at home for a fun family dessert, funnel cake continues to hold a special place, delighting taste buds with its crispy, sweet goodness.

What is Funnel Cake?

Funnel cake is a beloved fairground and carnival treat that originated in the United States. It's made by pouring batter through a funnel into hot oil in a circular pattern, creating a crispy, golden-brown lattice of fried dough. Once fried, it's typically dusted with powdered sugar, although variations can include toppings like chocolate sauce, fruit, or whipped cream.

Main Ingredient of Funnel Cake:

The main ingredient of funnel cake is a simple batter typically made from a combination of flour, eggs, milk, sugar, baking powder, and salt. This batter is poured through a funnel or a similar device into hot oil, creating the signature swirling pattern as it fries. The result is a crispy, golden-brown lattice of fried dough, which is then typically dusted with powdered sugar or other toppings before serving.

How to make Funnel Cake

1. In a large bowl, add and combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, fine sea salt, and baking powder.

3. Add the batter to squirt bottles and cut the spouts to ½-inch wide.

4. Fill a heavy-bottomed Dutch oven with about 2-inches of vegetable oil. Heat to 375F.

5. Pour the batter using the squirt bottle- start from the center of the oil and move in a spiral-like motion. Fry for 1-2 minutes.

6. Flip and fry for an additional 1-2 minutes.

8. Dust the cakes immediately with powdered sugar and top with your favourite toppings.

Expert Tips

  1. Maintain the Right Oil Temperature: Ensure your oil is heated to the correct temperature (around 375°F or 190°C) before pouring in the batter. This ensures the funnel cake cooks evenly and achieves that perfect golden-brown color without absorbing too much oil.
  2. Consistency is Key: Aim for a smooth, pourable batter. If it's too thick, the funnel cake may turn out doughy; if it's too thin, it may disintegrate in the oil. Adjust the consistency by adding small amounts of milk or flour until you reach the desired texture.
  3. Use a Funnel or Squeeze Bottle: While a funnel is traditional, a squeeze bottle with a wide opening can also work well for creating intricate designs. Practice your pouring technique on a test batch to get comfortable before making the final funnel cakes.
  4. Create Patterns: Experiment with different pouring techniques to create unique patterns and shapes. You can make classic spirals, loops, or even free-form designs for a creative twist.
  5. Don't Overcrowd the Fryer: Fry only one funnel cake at a time to ensure even cooking and prevent them from sticking together.
