What are Rum Balls?

Rum balls are a sweet and decadent dessert typically made from a mixture of crushed cookies, cocoa powder, sugar, and a splash of rum. The mixture is rolled into small balls and often coated in additional cocoa powder, powdered sugar, or chopped nuts. Rum balls are a popular treat during the holiday season and are often served at parties and gatherings.

While the exact origin of rum balls is unclear, they are believed to have originated in Europe, where they were traditionally made with leftover cake or bread. Today, there are many variations of rum balls, with different types of cookies, spices, and liqueurs used to create unique flavors.

Rum balls are a delicious and indulgent treat that are perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth. However, it's important to note that they do contain alcohol, so they should be enjoyed in moderation.

How to make Rum Balls

  1. In a large bowl add 2 whole eggs and an egg yolk. Add some caster sugar and using an electric hand mixer, cream the mixture till it is pale and sooth. Add vanilla extract to the bowl as well and mix it in.
  2. While the mixture is running, slowly add melted butter into it, while simultaneously mixing. Add cocoa powder to the mixture and fold it in using a silicone spatula. Add refined flour with baking powder and baking soda as well.
  3. Fold them into a thick and cohesive batter. Add in some milk to smooth out the consistency as well. Pour the mixed batter into a non-stick spring form baking pan and bake in a preheated 180 degree oven for 40 minutes.
  4. Take the cake out and demould it. Crumble the cake using your hands. Add some chocolate chips and condensed milk. Mix the condensed milk and cake with your hands and combine them properly.
  5. Shape the mixed dough into even sized balls and coat them in melted chocolate and crushed cashews. Drizzle some melted white chocolate over them and sprinkle some coloured sprinkles on top.
  6. Chill and serve them as it is.

Expert Tips

  1. Whip the eggs properly to make the cake light and fluffy for an airy crumb.
  2. Let the cake cool completely before crumbling or it would become very mushy.
  3. Be careful with adding the sugar as condensed milk can be very sweet as well.
